Excalibur provides on-site magnetic media maintenance and support on
removable disk packs utilized on older mini-computer and mainframe systems.
Excalibur's technicians have been servicing all types of removable disk packs
from 16MB single disk cartridges up to 300MB disk packs since the early 1970s.
Our employees have literally serviced over 1,000,000 disk packs at more than
50,000 customer sites in that time.
Each of Excalibur's employees have worked at one time or another for either Scopus Corporation, Randomex or Precision Methods, the leading disc maintenance firms in the industry. The marketplace transition to PCs and networks forced all three companies to discontinue operations, but their former employees continue to provide this valuable service as Excalibur.
Head crashes, data checks, bad blocks, job aborts and lost data are caused by one of three major problems that develop with removable disc packs which are not routinely maintained ... contamination, disc drive malfunctions and operating mishandling. These problems are inherent whenever packs are subjected to:
Each of these problem areas is addressed and corrected with Excalibur's System 90 Disk Pack Inspection & Cleaning Service.
A complete physical analysis of each disc pack includes:
Axial & Radial Runout Measurement of each platter (warpage factor of platter).
Inspection of Cover Set for wear or cracks.
Inspection of Spindle Lock for crossed threads or burrs.
Analysis of each platter for head crashes, load marks, and voids in the oxide.
Excalibur's proprietary cleaning system is the product of
over 20 years of in-depth experience in servicing over ONE MILLION
disc packs. This fully automated system, utilizing thermally bonded
man-made cleaning pads, captures and removes the error causing contaminants
and film build up from the recording surfaces below the flying height of
the drives heads.
A customer service report is completed and identifies packs not within manufacuturing specifications, crashed packs which should be immediately removed from service and packs which are within specification but may cause a future problem.
